980,000 Active and Retired Members Support Kildee’s Leadership Fighting for Good-Paying Jobs and Safe Working Conditions for Michiganders

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) announced their endorsement of Congressman Dan Kildee, citing his leadership fighting for workers’ rights in Congress. The UAW is one of the largest and most diverse unions in North America, with more than 400,000 active members and more than 580,000 retired members in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico and members in virtually every sector of the economy.

“Michigan’s workers built the middle class and all Americans have enjoyed higher wages and safer working conditions because of the men and women in unions like the UAW,” Congressman Kildee said. “Every Michigander deserves a good-paying job, safe working conditions, affordable health care and the ability to retire with dignity. The UAW has not only worked to protect and support workers, but has been instrumental in helping my hometown of Flint recover from the water crisis. Their dedication to our community is why I am honored to receive their endorsement. Michigan’s families deserve new leadership in Congress that will invest in our workers, raise wages, and put working families first, and I’m proud to stand in solidarity with them in this fight.”

Congressman Kildee has been a leader in Congress fighting for workers’ rights by preserving the Davis-Bacon Act and raising the federal minimum wage. Kildee stood in solidarity with Michigan’s working families and opposed Republicans in Lansing passing a so-called ‘Right-to-Work’ law that hurt workers. Kildee previously served as a member of the President’s Export Council, advising President Obama on trade and opposing unfair deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership that would have hurt American workers.

Kildee also introduced the 21st Century Jobs Act to expand the National Jobs Training Program that would train and employ Michiganders in good-paying high-skilled jobs. Kildee is also a champion of the “Make in in America” jobs plan in Congress to revitalize our nation’s manufacturing base by eliminating tax breaks for companies that move jobs overseas and create high-skill, high-wage jobs for Michigan.

“As a resident of 5th Congressional District, and member of the UAW, I could not be more pleased to know that we have someone like Dan Kildee representing us in D.C. Dan is a proven leader that knows the issues of the people and the compassion that we need in today’s society,” said Director of UAW Region 1D, Gerald Kariem.

Congressman Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and is serving in third term in Congress. He currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee as well as a Senior Whip.

The Fifth Congressional District includes Genesee, Bay, Arenac and Iosco counties and parts of Tuscola and Saginaw counties.
