Largest Grassroots Environmental Organization Supports Kildee’s Work to Protect the Great Lakes and Environment
Congressman Dan Kildee announced the endorsement of the Michigan chapter of the Sierra Club today, who cited Kildee’s numerous achievements protecting Michigan’s environment and the Great Lakes. The Sierra Club, the nation’s largest grassroots environmental organization, has over 2.7 million members including 150,000 Michiganders.
“Michigan families want their elected officials to protect public health and our environment. I have stood up to extreme budget cuts at the state and federal level that led to the Flint water crisis or that jeopardized our Great Lakes,” said Congressman Kildee.“I am proud to have the support of the Sierra Club as we continue the fight to protect the Great Lakes, Michigan’s most precious natural resource, and work to make sure every community has access to safe and clean drinking water.”
Congressman Kildee worked alongside members of both parties in Congress to protect funds for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which President Trump’s budget would have slashed by over 90 percent. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative protects the Great Lakes from threats like pollution and invasive species such as Asian carp, and was fully funded after Kildee’s efforts for the second year in a row.
In the wake of the Flint water crisis, Congressman Kildee led the fight to help Flint get the necessary resources to help families recover. Kildee worked in a bipartisan fashion, with Republicans and Democrats, to deliver $170 million in federal aid to address the water crisis that is now being used to help replace lead service lines and expand health care for Flint families. Congressman Kildee has also pushed for accountability for the failed decisions that led to the man-made crisis, including passing bipartisan legislation in Congress to strengthen and more quickly warn the public when high levels of lead are found in drinking water.
“The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Congressman Dan Kildee because of his commitment to protecting Michigan’s environment,” said Robert Aguirre, Sierra Club activist and Linden resident in Congressman Kildee’s district. “Since being elected, he has consistently voted to safeguard clean air, clean water and public health. Congressman Kildee has been a true champion for the Great Lakes and for the people of Flint during the water crisis. We will work to make sure he is re-elected so that he can continue fighting for our families and for our future.”
Last month, Congressman Kildee announced he had filed nominating petitions to be placed on the ballot for re-election. Congressman Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and is serving in third term in Congress. He currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee as well as a Senior Whip. The Fifth Congressional District includes Genesee, Bay, Arenac and Iosco counties and parts of Tuscola and Saginaw counties.
