Thousands of Michigan Workers Support Kildee’s Agenda to Raise Wages and Invest in Michigan

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Michigan State Council announced their endorsement of Congressman Dan Kildee as he runs for re-election to represent Michigan’s Fifth Congressional District. The SEIU is one of the largest labor unions representing over 2 million workers nationwide, including 30,000 Michigan workers.

“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the SEIU and the support of over 30,000 working Michiganders,” Congressman Kildee said. “Michigan’s workers are the best in the world and can compete with anyone on an equal playing field, but they’re working harder than ever without getting ahead as Republicans in Congress line the pockets of their billionaire donors and corporations who are shipping jobs overseas. I am proud to stand alongside Michigan’s working families as we fight for new leadership in Congress that will invest in Michigan’s families, raise wages, and put working people first.”

Congressman Kildee has been a leading voice in Congress for investing in skilled trades training, creating good-paying jobs, and lowering the cost of health care. In the wake of the Flint water crisis, Congressman Kildee led the fight to get Flint the necessary resources to help families recover and upgrade the city’s water infrastructure. Kildee worked in a bipartisan fashion, with Republicans and Democrats, to deliver $170 million in federal aid to address the water crisis that is now being used to help replace lead service lines and expand health care for Flint families. Kildee also introduced the 21st Century Jobs Act to expand the National Jobs Training Program that would train and employ Michiganders in good-paying high-skilled jobs. Kildee is also a champion of affordable health care in Congress, voting against the Republican health care bill, Trumpcare, which raised premiums for Michigan families, and supporting expanding Medicare expansion allowing young people to buy into the program and enabling Medicare to negotiate drug prices and lower the cost of prescription drugs.

“The list of what Congressman Kildee has already accomplished in the pursuit of making life better for Michiganders is long,” said Andy Potter, President of the SEIU Michigan State Council. “And while there is most certainly more work to be done, we are confident in Congressman Kildee’s ability and dedication to continue fighting as an advocate for working families.”

Congressman Kildee has earned the support of over one million Michigan workers, having been endorsed by the Michigan AFL-CIO, the Michigan Education Association, the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights and AFSCME. Congressman Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and is serving in third term in Congress. He currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee as well as a Senior Whip.

The Fifth Congressional District includes Genesee, Bay, Arenac and Iosco counties and parts of Tuscola and Saginaw counties.
