Michigan AFL-CIO Supports Kildee’s Efforts to Invest in Michigan and Raise Wages for Workers
The Michigan American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) announced their endorsement of Congressman Dan Kildee as he runs for re-election to represent Michigan’s Fifth Congressional District. The AFL-CIO is a voluntary federation of trade unions representing over 1 million workers in Michigan.
“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the AFL-CIO and the support of over 1 million working Michiganders,” Congressman Kildee said. “Michigan families are working harder than ever without getting ahead while Republicans in Congress are working to line the pockets of their wealthy donors and billionaires. I am fighting to create fair trade policies, and an equal playing field so we can raise wages, invest in our workers, and create more opportunities for families here at home. I’m proud to stand with Michigan’s working families in this fight.”
Congressman Kildee has been a leading voice in Congress for investing in skilled trades training, creating good-paying jobs, and rebuilding the country’s failing infrastructure. In the wake of the Flint water crisis, Congressman Kildee led the fight to get Flint the necessary resources to help families recover and upgrade the city’s water infrastructure. Kildee worked in a bipartisan fashion, with Republicans and Democrats, to deliver $170 million in federal aid to address the water crisis that is now being used to help replace lead service lines and expand health care for Flint families. Kildee also introduced the 21st Century Jobs Act to expand the National Jobs Training Program that would train and employ Michiganders in good-paying high-skilled jobs. Kildee is also a champion of the Make in in America jobs plan in Congress to revitalize our nation’s manufacturing base by eliminating tax breaks for companies that move jobs overseas and create high-skill, high-wage jobs for Michigan.
“Dan Kildee goes to work everyday for Michigan’s working families, that’s why the AFL-CIO is proud to endorse him,” said Ron Bieber, President of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “Congress needs more leaders like Congressman Kildee who are fighting for policies to put money in the pockets of working families and retirees, not just wealthy billionaires and corporations. We support his agenda to raise wages, invest in skilled workers, and bring high-paying manufacturing jobs to Michigan, and we’re proud to support his campaign for re-election.”
This follows recent endorsements by the Michigan Education Association and Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, solidifying Kildee’s support among Michigan’s workers. Congressman Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and is serving in third term in Congress. He currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee as well as a Senior Whip.
The Fifth Congressional District includes Genesee, Bay, Arenac and Iosco counties and parts of Tuscola and Saginaw counties.
