Thousands of Michigan teachers & educators support Kildee’s tireless fight for students in Congress
Congressman Dan Kildee announced the endorsement of the Michigan Education Association today, who touted his leadership in Congress as an advocate for students and teachers. The MEA is the largest union representing teachers and educational professionals in Michigan, consisting of 140,000 members.
“I’m proud to have the support of the MEA and stand with our teachers to fight for policies that invest in our schools and student’s future. Every child, no matter the zip code that they are born in, deserves a quality, public education. Michigan families have seen first-hand the dangerous results of Betsy DeVos’ disastrous education experiment that has failed our kids. Elected officials should work to support students, teachers and good schools, not work to advance the interests of wealthy donors and special interests.”
In Congress, Kildee has consistently worked to increase access and affordability to public education in Michigan. Kildee led the fight in Congress to expand Early Head Start and Head Start programs in Flint, increasing access to early childhood education. Kildee also introduced bipartisan legislation that would expand after school programs for students throughout the region. He has also advocated for more school aid funding to ensure that students have smaller classroom sizes and the support they need to succeed.
“On behalf of the approximately 140,000 members of the Michigan Education Association, I am proud to announce our endorsement of Congressman Dan Kildee for re-election in Michigan’s Fifth Congressional District. Congressman Kildee has consistently stood up for public school educators and students, so we will once again stand up for him,” said MEA President Paula Herbart. “Congressman Kildee has been a tireless fighter seeking resources to help Flint—especially its children—recover from the tragic water crisis, while continuing to hold government officials responsible for their misdeeds which brought about this preventable tragedy.”
Last month, Congressman Kildee announced he had filed nominating petitions to be placed on the ballot for re-election. Congressman Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and is serving in third term in Congress. He currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee as well as a Senior Whip.
The Fifth Congressional District includes Genesee, Bay, Arenac and Iosco counties and parts of Tuscola and Saginaw counties.
