Largest LGBTQ Civil Rights Organization Support Kildee’s Leadership Promoting Equality for all Michiganders
The Human Rights Campaign announced their endorsement of Congressman Dan Kildee, citing his leadership promoting equality for all Michiganders, including the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national LGBTQ civil rights organization, representing three million members across the country.
“In 2018, a Michigan same-sex couple can be married on Sunday, yet fired from their job on Monday and evicted from their home on Tuesday, simply for being gay. Discrimination of any kind, including against members of the LGBTQ community, is wrong,” Congressman Kildee said. “I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign and I am proud to continue working with them to push for pro-equality policies in Congress that protect all Americans from discrimination.”
Congressman Dan Kildee is leading voice in Congress for the LGBTQ community, serving as a Vice Chair of the Congressional LGBT Caucus. Kildee continues to fight to pass the Equality Act, which would amend the Civil Rights Act to include sex, sexual orientation and gender identity among the prohibited categories of discrimination or segregation.
“Throughout his time in public service, Rep. Kildee has proven himself to be a stalwart champion for the LGBTQ community,” said HRC Michigan State Director Amritha Venkataraman. “He has stood by us in the fight for full federal equality and HRC is proud to endorse him for re-election. We look forward to working with him to move equality forward both in Michigan and across the country.”
In Michigan, HRC identified more than 1.1 million Michiganders as voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies. HRC has prioritized organizing in Michigan in the 2018 cycle and has already put staff and resources on the ground in the state as part of the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.
Congressman Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and is serving in third term in Congress. He currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee as well as a Senior Whip. The Fifth Congressional District includes Genesee, Bay, Arenac and Iosco counties and parts of Tuscola and Saginaw counties.
