Grassroots Environmental Advocacy Organization Supports Kildee’s Agenda to Protect Great Lakes, Clean Up PFAS Chemical Contamination and Help Flint Recover from Water Crisis
Congressman Dan Kildee announced the endorsement of Clean Water Action, as he runs for re-election to represent Michigan’s Fifth Congressional District. Clean Water Action is Michigan’s largest grassroots conservation group with over 250,000 members across the state.
“I am honored to have the support Clean Water Action and their members, who are working to ensure everyone has access to safe and clean drinking water,” said Congressman Kildee. “In the richest nation in the world, everyone should have access to clean drinking water. A foreign corporation like Nestle should not be able to plunder our most precious natural resource while many Flint and Oscoda families still go without safe drinking water. I’m proud to lead the fight for safe and clean drinking water in Michigan and I’m proud to have Clean Water Action in that fight with me.”
In the wake of the Flint water crisis, Congressman Kildee led the fight to help Flint get the necessary resources to help families recover. Kildee worked in a bipartisan fashion, with Republicans and Democrats, to deliver $170 million in federal aid to address the water crisis that is now being used to help replace lead service lines and expand health care for Flint families. Congressman Kildee has also pushed for accountability for the failed decisions that led to the man-made crisis, including passing bipartisan legislation in Congress to strengthen and more quickly warn the public when high levels of lead are found in drinking water.
Kildee also worked with Democrats and Republicans to hold the EPA and manufacturers accountable after dangerous Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) chemical contamination was discovered acrossMichigan, including in Oscoda. Kildee worked across the aisle to get tens of millions in aid for people in Michigan to get access to clean drinking water, clean up contamination and ensure residents have access to health care.
“Dan Kildee has been an outstanding advocate for our environment and the Great Lakes,” said Mary Brady-Enerson, Clean Water Action Michigan Director. “From fighting for clean water in Flint, to standing against cuts to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Kildee has shown that he is willing and able to lead on critical issues affecting his constituents.”
Congressman Kildee has also earned the support of the Sierra Club. In addition, over one million Michigan workers have been endorsed by the Michigan AFL-CIO, the Michigan Education Association, the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Congressman Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and is serving in third term in Congress. He currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee as well as a Senior Whip.
The Fifth Congressional District includes Genesee, Bay, Arenac and Iosco counties and parts of Tuscola and Saginaw counties.
