Thousands of Michigan teachers & educators support Kildee’s leadership to expand access to quality education

Congressman Dan Kildee announced the endorsement of the American Federation of Teachers Michigan today, who recognized him as a champion for Michigan’s students and teachers. The AFT represents 35,000 teachers and educators throughout the state.

“I’m proud to have the support of the AFT and Michigan’s educators as we work to make Michigan a state that values and funds a quality public education for every child,” Congressman Kildee said. “Michigan families know all too well the disastrous results of Betsy DeVos’ education experiment that has disinvested from our public schools and failed our students. Michigan’s children deserve a Congress who will support them and work with teachers to invest in their future, not advance the interests of wealthy special interests. Every child, no matter the zip code that they are born in, deserves a quality, public education.”

In Congress, Kildee has been a champion for accessible and affordable education at all levels in Michigan. Kildee led the fight in Congress to expand Early Head Start and Head Start programs in Flint, increasing access to early childhood education. Kildee introduced bipartisan legislation that would expand after school programs for students throughout the country. Kildee also introduced legislation to relieve the crushing burden of student debt, making college more affordable for Michigan families. He has continuously advocated for more school aid funding to ensure that students have smaller classroom sizes and the support they need to succeed.

Congressman Kildee has earned the support of over one million Michigan workers, having been endorsed by the Michigan AFL-CIO, the Michigan Education Association, the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Congressman Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and is serving in third term in Congress. He currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee as well as a Senior Whip.

The Fifth Congressional District includes Genesee, Bay, Arenac and Iosco counties and parts of Tuscola and Saginaw counties.
