July 23, 2018
Largest public employees union supports Kildee’s agenda to create jobs and raise wages
The American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 25 announced their endorsement of Congressman Dan Kildee as he runs for re-election to represent Michigan’s Fifth Congressional District. AFSCME is the largest public sector employees union, representing over 50,000 Michigan workers including nurses, EMTs, and child care providers.
“I’m proud to have earned the endorsement of the 50,000 working Michiganders of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees,” said Congressman Dan Kildee. “From so-called ‘Right-to-Work’ to the Janus Supreme Court decision, it is all too clear that Michigan’s working families are under attack from Republicans in power. It’s time for new leadership in Washington that puts working families first, raising wages and and working to grow our economy, not just enrich wealthy donors and billionaires. I’m proud to stand with Michigan’s working families in this fight.”
Congressman Kildee has been a leading voice in Congress for investing in skilled trades training, creating good-paying jobs, and rebuilding the country’s failing infrastructure. In the wake of the Flint water crisis, Congressman Kildee led the fight to get Flint the necessary resources to help families recover and upgrade the city’s water infrastructure. Kildee worked in a bipartisan fashion, with Republicans and Democrats, to deliver $170 million in federal aid to address the water crisis that is now being used to help replace lead service lines and expand health care for Flint families. Kildee also introduced the 21st Century Jobs Act to expand the National Jobs Training Program that would train and employ Michiganders in good-paying high-skilled jobs. Kildee is also a champion of the Make in in America jobs plan in Congress to revitalize our nation’s manufacturing base by eliminating tax breaks for companies that move jobs overseas and create high-skill, high-wage jobs for Michigan.
“The Republican leadership in D.C. has fought tooth and nail to make life harder for every day working people and rig the rules in favor of big businesses and CEOs” said AFSCME Council 25 President Lawrence A. Roehrig. “Congressman Kildee has laid out a bold vision where anyone that works hard for a living isn’t forced to choose between groceries or the electric bill, where children from every zip code have access to affordable higher education and vocational training, and where our seniors don’t have to worry about constant attacks on their pensions and healthcare and can retire with dignity.”
Congressman Kildee has earned the support of over one million Michigan workers, having the endorsements of the Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan Education Association, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights. Congressman Kildee was first elected to Congress in 2012 and is serving in third term in Congress. He currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee as well as a Senior Whip.
The Fifth Congressional District includes Genesee, Bay, Arenac and Iosco counties and parts of Tuscola and Saginaw counties.
